What is diecast scale? This is the first question most collectors ask when they start buying diecast cars. It looks confusing at first, but it’s really simple.

Diecast scale is just a measure of the model’s size compared to the real car. A 1:24 model, for example, is 24 times smaller than the actual vehicle — so the smaller the second number, the larger the model.

Use this quick guide to picture how big each scale is (an average car is about 4.3 m long):

Scale Typical Length Best For
1:18 8–9 in (20–23 cm) Large, highly detailed display pieces
1:24 6–7 in (15–18 cm) The most popular collector size — great detail, easy to display
1:32 5–6 in (13–15 cm) Compact models, great for gifting
1:43 4–5 in (10–12 cm) Small, shelf-friendly — collect many in little space
