RC Car Maintenance for Beginners: Simple Fixes for Common Problems

Most RC cars that stop working aren't broken — they're dirty, out of adjustment, or low on charge. Here's a practical troubleshooting order plus the ten-minute routine that prevents most of it.
After every run: the ten-minute routine
- Disconnect the battery. Never store a car with the pack plugged in — it slowly drains and can damage the cells.
- Brush off dirt and grass with a dry paintbrush. Pay attention to the gear cover, suspension arms and around the motor.
- Never use a water jet unless the car is certified waterproof, and even then dry it and re-oil the bearings afterwards.
- Check the wheel nuts and screws. Vibration loosens them; a loose wheel nut is the most common cause of a wheel coming off mid-run.
- Look at the tyres and driveshafts for wrapped hair, grass or thread. Wrapped fibres kill bearings quietly.
Problem: the car doesn't move at all
Work through in this order:
- Transmitter batteries fresh? Car switched on? (Switch the transmitter on first, always.)
- Battery actually charged and connected properly?
- Is the car bound to the transmitter? Most failures after a battery swap are a lost bind — re-bind per the manual.
- Any lights on the ESC? No light usually means no power reaching it; check the connector and the on/off switch.
- Is the ESC in low-voltage cutoff? Charge and retry.
Problem: it makes a grinding or clicking noise
This is almost always the gear mesh. The pinion (small gear on the motor) and spur (large gear) need a paper-thin gap. Loosen the motor mount screws, place a strip of paper between the gears, push the motor into mesh, tighten, remove the paper. Too tight cooks the motor; too loose strips the spur teeth.
If the noise is from a wheel, suspect a stripped differential or a damaged dogbone/driveshaft.
Problem: the car pulls to one side
Set the steering trim to centre on the transmitter, then look at the car with the wheels straight. If they aren't straight, adjust the steering linkage (turnbuckle) rather than dialling in more trim. Also check for a bent steering knuckle after a crash and uneven tyre wear.
Problem: it loses control at a distance
- Weak transmitter batteries — the most common cause by far
- Antenna wire coiled inside the chassis instead of routed up the antenna tube
- Running near a Wi-Fi-heavy area on 2.4GHz — move location and retest
- Damaged receiver antenna wire (never cut or shorten it)
Problem: it gets hot and slows down
Touch the motor and ESC after a run — hot to the touch is normal, too hot to hold for two seconds is not. Causes: gearing too high (fit a smaller pinion), binding drivetrain (lift the car and spin the wheels by hand — they should spin freely), or a dragging brake. Let the car cool fully between packs.
Problem: soft or bouncy handling
Shock oil leaks out over time. If the car pogos after a jump or leans heavily in corners, check the shock bodies for oily film and rebuild them. It's a 20-minute job with a rebuild kit and makes a bigger difference to driving feel than any other cheap upgrade.
Parts worth keeping on hand
- Spare spur gear and pinion
- Suspension arms (front, they break first)
- Driveshafts / dogbones
- A set of body clips — they vanish permanently outdoors
- Thread lock for metal-to-metal screws
The three habits that matter most
Transmitter on first and off last. Disconnect the battery after every run. Brush the car down while it's still in your hands, not tomorrow. Do those three and most of this article never applies to you.
