What Diecast Models Are Made Of: Zinc Alloy, ABS and Rubber Explained

Product listings throw around “zinc alloy”, “ABS” and “metal body” without explaining any of it. Knowing what each material does tells you immediately whether a price is fair.
Where the word “diecast” comes from
Die casting is a manufacturing process: molten metal is forced under high pressure into a hardened steel mould (the die), cooled, and ejected. It produces sharp, repeatable detail at speed — which is exactly what a scale model needs. The word describes how the body is made, not what the whole car is made of.
Zamak: the metal in your model
Almost every diecast model body is Zamak, a zinc alloy with aluminium, magnesium and copper. Zinc melts at a low temperature, so it doesn't destroy the steel dies, and it captures fine detail — door shut lines, badge outlines, vent slats.
Zamak is also why models are heavy. Zinc is denser than aluminium, and that heft is the single quickest way to judge quality. A 1:18 zinc-bodied model runs roughly 700 g–1.2 kg; a plastic-bodied one of the same size is a fraction of that.
ABS plastic: not a shortcut
ABS handles the parts metal can't do well: bumpers, mirrors, spoilers, grilles, interiors, wheels. There are good engineering reasons for this. Thin metal mirror stalks would snap; fine mesh grilles can't be cast; and a metal bumper adds weight where the model doesn't need it. Good models use ABS deliberately, and paint it to match the body so you can't tell the difference. Bad models use it to replace the body itself.
Rubber vs plastic tyres
Real rubber tyres are one of the clearest markers of a premium model. They have moulded tread, sometimes sidewall lettering, and they flex when squeezed. Cheaper models use hard PVC or plastic with a shallow moulded pattern and a shiny finish. Rubber also sits better on a shelf — the car doesn't rock.
The trade-off: rubber hardens over years and can leave marks on shelves. Rotate models occasionally and keep them out of heat.
Glass, carpet and photo-etched parts
- Windows are clear acrylic, never glass — which is why ammonia-based cleaners must never be used on them.
- Flocking (fine fibre applied electrostatically) creates the carpeted floor and boot lining on higher-end models.
- Photo-etched metal parts — wipers, badges, mesh grilles — are chemically etched from thin sheet and appear on the most detailed models. They're a strong sign you're in premium territory.
Resin: the other kind of model
Some high-end collector models are cast in resin rather than metal. Resin holds even finer detail and allows shapes metal casting can't manage, so limited-run and obscure models are often resin. The trade-offs: they're usually sealed (no opening doors), lighter, more brittle, and more expensive. Resin isn't better or worse — it's a different product for display-only collectors.
What the paint layers are
A good model has a primer, a base coat, sometimes a metallic layer, and a clear coat on top. That clear coat is what gives depth and what solvents destroy. Budget models skip it, which is why they look flat and scratch easily.
Reading a listing properly
“Zinc alloy body with ABS parts, rubber tyres” — a genuine diecast model.
“High-quality alloy” with no weight listed — ask for the weight.
“Metal” on a 1:18 that weighs 300 g — the body is plastic.
“Resin, sealed body” — a display-only collector piece, not a toy.
Materials aren't trivia. They set the weight, the detail, the durability and the price — and they're the fastest way to tell whether a model is worth what it's asking.
